A Journey of Passion and Self-Discovery

Sarbjeet Singh’s path to becoming one of India’s foremost Taekwondo coaches was anything but straightforward. In his early years, Sarbjeet explored a variety of career options, initially aspiring to join the merchant navy and later working in the telecom sector. However, despite these practical pursuits, his heart remained committed to the world of martial arts — a passion that had been quietly brewing since his youth.

Under the guidance of Amit Kumar Joshi and Master Atul Pangotra, two stalwarts in Indian Taekwondo, Sarbjeet honed his skills and gradually realized that his true vocation lay not in corporate boardrooms but in dojangs (training halls). It was this unwavering passion that propelled him towards a full-fledged career in Taekwondo, setting the stage for the influential role he plays today.

A Defining Moment of Transformation

Life’s greatest trials often shape its strongest individuals. In 2010, Sarbjeet faced a personal tragedy that would irrevocably change the course of his life: the untimely death of his younger brother. This heartbreaking event became a catalyst for transformation. In honor of his brother’s memory and dreams, Sarbjeet made a profound decision — he left behind a promising career at Wipro, one of India’s top IT companies, to devote himself fully to Taekwondo coaching.

Initially, Sarbjeet offered his services without remuneration, choosing to train his late brother’s students free of cost. What began as an act of love and remembrance evolved into a powerful life mission. His selflessness and commitment to community service remain integral to his coaching philosophy even today.

Coaching Philosophy: Excellence Rooted in Integrity

Sarbjeet Singh’s approach to coaching is built upon a solid foundation of discipline, transparency, and service — values instilled in him by his father from an early age. He believes that martial arts training should be accessible to all, regardless of economic status. At Tokey Taekwondo Club, 70–80 students are enrolled at any given time, with many receiving free or subsidized training based on financial need.

His emphasis on character building over mere competitive success sets him apart from other coaches. Sarbjeet fosters an environment where students are encouraged to develop not just physical strength, but also mental resilience, ethical sportsmanship, and respect for others — the true essence of martial arts.

As a coach, Sarbjeet is deeply committed to individualized training, recognizing that each student has unique strengths, challenges, and aspirations. His tailored coaching methods have helped countless athletes excel at various competitive levels, producing a steady stream of national champions, black belts, and emerging referees.

A Distinguished Career as an Official and Referee

Beyond coaching, Sarbjeet Singh has distinguished himself on the national and international stage as a referee and official. His credentials are impressive: he proudly holds the honor of being the first Indian Taekwondo referee to officiate at the prestigious Grand Prix — one of the sport’s highest competitive platforms.

His achievements as a referee are not just personal milestones; they reflect his broader contribution to the sport’s integrity and professionalism. By upholding the highest standards of fairness and impartiality, Sarbjeet serves as a role model for the next generation of Indian referees.

Shaping the Future: Commitment to Education and Development

n addition to coaching elite athletes, Sarbjeet is actively involved in training and mentoring future referees. Recently, he participated as an instructor at the State Referee Seminar organized by the Madhya Pradesh Taekwondo Association. The seminar saw the participation of around 40 new referees, all preparing to take their first steps toward becoming national-level officials.

Sarbjeet’s role in such initiatives underlines his broader vision for Taekwondo in India: a vision that emphasizes not only athletic excellence but also the development of a knowledgeable, ethical, and professional sporting community. His teaching style, marked by clarity, patience, and motivational leadership, leaves a lasting impression on every student and trainee he encounters.

Legacy and Continuing Mission

As he looks toward the future, Sarbjeet Singh remains steadfast in his mission to empower youth through Taekwondo. Whether through grassroots community programs, elite athlete training, or referee development workshops, he continues to shape the landscape of Indian Taekwondo with tireless dedication.

Sarbjeet’s story is a reminder that true success in coaching extends beyond medals and titles. It lies in the countless lives touched, the values imparted, and the legacy built through consistent, heartfelt service. In every sense of the word, Sarbjeet Singh is not just a coach — he is a builder of futures, a beacon of hope, and a paragon of unwavering dedication to the art and spirit of Taekwondo.
