Banu Mushtaq’s ‘Heart Lamp’ Shines Bright with Booker Win

By Muskan Khan

Indian writer, lawyer, and activist Banu Mushtaq made history by becoming the first Kannada author to win the International Booker Prize. Her book, Heart Lamp, a deeply moving collection of short stories about Muslim women in Karnataka, touched hearts around the world. This global honor, which she shares with her translator Deepa Bhasthi, is not just a personal win but a victory for Kannada literature, women’s voices, and Indian storytelling.

This is only the second time an Indian book has received this prize, the first being Geetanjali Shree’s win in 2022. But what makes Heart Lamp even more special is that it is the first short story collection ever to win the International Booker. The award ceremony, held at London’s iconic Tate Modern, was a celebration of voices that have too often gone unheard.

A Light for the Silenced

In her heartfelt acceptance speech, Mushtaq said, “This feels like a thousand fireflies lighting a single sky—brief, brilliant, and absolutely collective.” With those words, she reminded the world that her stories are not just fiction—they are echoes of real lives, real struggles, and real resilience. The £50,000 prize is split equally between Mushtaq and Bhasthi, honoring the vital role of translation in bridging cultures.

Who is Banu Mushtaq?

Born in the 1940s in Hassan, Karnataka, Banu Mushtaq grew up in a traditional Muslim family, where her father encouraged her to think, write, and speak up—a rare gift for girls at the time. She wrote her first short story in middle school, and by the age of 26, she had been published in the popular Kannada magazine Prajamata.

Mushtaq is more than just a writer. She’s a trained lawyer, a fierce women’s rights advocate, and a woman who has broken every boundary placed in her path. From marrying by choice to fighting for justice in courtrooms, she has never been afraid to challenge norms. Her life is a story of standing tall, speaking out, and staying true to her beliefs.

What Does She Write About?

Mushtaq’s stories shine a light on the real lives of Muslim women in Karnataka. Heart Lamp, which brings together 12 stories written over 30 years, reveals the struggles, small victories, dreams, and courage of everyday women. Her characters face restrictions, violence, and expectations—but they also find quiet ways to fight back and claim their place in the world.

Her writing explores gender, caste, power, religion, and the often unseen pressures placed on women. With her background in law and activism, her stories carry a strong sense of justice, but they are also full of human warmth and humor, making even the hardest truths easier to digest.

A Life Built on Courage

Mushtaq’s personal journey is just as inspiring as her fiction. From a young age, she questioned authority, believed in herself, and stood up for others. As a lawyer, she fought legal battles for women’s rights. As a writer, she gave voice to those who couldn’t speak up. She faced criticism, opposition, and societal pressure—but never backed down.

Over the decades, she has written short stories, essays, and poems, all rooted in the lives of women and minority communities. Her work has been translated into many languages and adapted into films, reaching people far beyond Karnataka.

Impact Beyond Awards

While the International Booker Prize is a huge achievement, Mushtaq’s real impact lies in how her stories empower readers, especially women. Many see themselves reflected in her characters and find strength in her words. She has become a symbol of courage, showing that even stories from small towns and marginalized communities can shake the world.

By winning this global honor, she has not only brought Kannada literature into the spotlight but has also paved the way for more voices to rise—voices that are honest, local, and powerful.

Legacy of Light and Strength

Banu Mushtaq’s story—from a curious girl in Hassan to a celebrated international author—is a powerful reminder that words can change the world. Her victory is a tribute to resilience, truth, and the transformative power of storytelling.

As she once said, her success belongs to many. It’s a collective flame, lit by women who have fought, endured, and hoped. And thanks to her, that flame now burns brighter than ever—guiding others, lighting paths, and proving that stories from the heart will always find their way home.
