Stay Informed, Stay Safe: Understanding Real Safety Advisories in India

By Muskan Khan

India has a strong public safety and disaster management system, with official advisories issued through trusted government channels like the Press Information Bureau (PIB), the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), and the Ministry of Defence. These advisories are the only reliable source of guidance during emergencies, travel risks, or security situations—whether domestic or international.

What Real Advisories Look Like

Official advisories are issued in response to specific events, such as natural disasters, civil unrest, or international conflicts. For example, the MEA recently advised Indian citizens to avoid travel to Iran and Israel due to rising tensions and instructed those already there to register with Indian embassies and limit their movement.

These updates are shared through government websites, verified social media accounts, and press releases. Citizens are urged to rely only on these sources and ignore messages from unverified platforms like WhatsApp or Facebook.

Fake Alerts and Panic Messages: Don’t Fall for Them

Recently, a viral message claimed the Indian government urged citizens to hoard essentials and keep ₹50,000 cash due to tensions with Pakistan. The PIB Fact Check team quickly debunked this as fake. No such advisory was issued. There is no shortage of essentials, and people should not panic or hoard.

“This claim is fake. The government has not issued any such advisory. Beware! Trust only official government sources for credible information.” – PIB Fact Check

Essential Supplies Are Stable

India’s supply chain for food, medicines, and other necessities is robust. Ministries and state governments continuously monitor stocks and take prompt action during disruptions. During past emergencies—like the COVID-19 pandemic or the Odisha train tragedy—essential items were quickly delivered to those in need.

There is no official instruction to stockpile. Panic buying only creates artificial shortages and disrupts normalcy.

Responding to Security Situations

India’s armed forces and security agencies are always alert. After recent attacks in Jammu and Kashmir, precision strikes were carried out against terrorist camps without escalating the situation. During such times, fake news often spreads, like the recent false claim about all airports shutting down. PIB Fact Check confirmed only border-area airports had temporary restrictions.

The government keeps citizens informed and urges everyone to stay calm and avoid forwarding unverified news.

How to Stay Safe and Informed

  • Follow only official sources: PIB, MEA, Ministry of Defence, and state government websites.
  • Don’t believe or forward viral messages about stocking up on essentials or cash.
  • Follow instructions from local authorities during emergencies.
  • Avoid travel to regions flagged by government advisories.
  • Report fake news or suspicious activity to authorities.
  • Stay calm, share only verified information, and help others stay informed.

India has no shortage of essentials and there’s no advisory to stock up. The government is fully prepared to handle emergencies, and safety advisories will always come from trusted sources. Avoid rumours, stay informed, and support one another by promoting facts over fear.
