TikTok Sparks Speculation with Job Openings in India Amid Ongoing Ban

By Muskan Khan

Gurugram– Even though TikTok remains officially banned in India, its parent company ByteDance has posted fresh job openings for its Gurugram office — reigniting speculation about the app’s possible return.

According to a LinkedIn listing, the company is currently hiring for two roles:

  • Content Moderator (Bengali language preferred)
  • Wellbeing Partnership and Operations Lead

Within just three days of posting, over 100 applicants have already shown interest.

The Timing: Modi in China, ByteDance Hiring in India

The job postings coincidentally surfaced while Prime Minister Narendra Modi is in Tianjin, China, attending the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit — his first visit to China in seven years. The timing has fueled chatter that Indo-China relations might be thawing, potentially paving the way for Chinese apps like TikTok to re-enter the Indian market.

But the Ban Still Stands

Despite the buzz, Indian officials have clarified that TikTok’s return is not on the cards “anytime soon.” ByteDance itself has confirmed that the ban remains in place, and as of now, TikTok is still unavailable for download on both Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store in India.

TikTok was banned in India in 2020 amid escalating geopolitical tensions with China. At the time, it was one of the most popular apps in the country, boasting over 200 million users.

Why the Job Openings Matter

While the positions are limited to backend operations, their very presence in India has raised eyebrows. Some industry watchers believe the recruitment drive is part of ByteDance’s strategy to strengthen its India operations quietly, keeping the door open for a potential comeback if regulatory conditions change.

For now, though, the company is walking a fine line — expanding its footprint in India without directly challenging the government’s ban.

TikTok’s latest hiring spree has rekindled speculation, but officially, the app’s return to Indian smartphones remains uncertain.
